Accelerated TMS in Greeley, CO
What Is Accelerated TMS?
Accelerated TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation treatment performed in our office in Greeley. During this procedure, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp to deliver magnetic pulses that change nerve cell activity in the brain. An accelerated TMS session usually involves 5- 10 treatments daily, with a 50-minute pause between each session. This accelerated treatment takes only 5 days versus the 6-9 weeks for standard TMS treatment. The magnetic pulses are intended to stimulate regions of the brain that are underactive in certain mental health conditions, resulting in improvement in symptoms of depression and other disorders.
TMS Techniques
- Single-Pulse TMS: This type of TMS uses a magnetic coil to deliver a brief, powerful pulse to a specific brain area. This short stimulation lasts a few milliseconds. It is primarily used for diagnostic purposes to measure neural connectivity.
- Repetitive TMS: Repetitive TMS (rTMS) generates a train of magnetic pulses that target specific brain regions over a certain period. This treatment creates longer-lasting changes in neural activity, making it an effective therapeutic tool. The frequency of pulses can be adjusted to either increase (high-frequency) or decrease (low-frequency) cortical excitability. rTMS has shown promise in treating various neurological and psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, and chronic pain.
- Deep TMS: This advanced TMS therapy can reach deeper brain structures than conventional techniques. It uses a specially designed H-coil that generates a magnetic field capable of penetrating up to 4 cm beneath the skull. This allows for the stimulation of brain regions that were previously inaccessible with standard methods. Deep TMS is highly effective in reducing the symptoms of treatment-resistant depression. It is FDA-approved for treating major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It has also been explored for addressing substance use and other conditions.

Brain Mapping
The first step in the accelerated TMS procedure is brain mapping. It helps to precisely locate the brain area associated with the patient's symptoms.
The mapping process starts by taking a series of head measurements, using skull landmarks to determine the treatment location. Then, the doctor will locate the primary motor cortex, which runs in a strip from one ear across the top of the head to the other ear. The doctor will then apply TMS pulses to locate the motor hot spot. This brain area controls the motor movement of the contralateral (opposite) hand. It serves as a landmark to map the brain regions associated with depression or other conditions. The hot spot also helps to determine the correct dose or strength of magnetic pulses utilized during the treatments. This procedure may be repeated 1-2 times over the full course of therapy to ensure continued precise targeting.
